English-language and admissions tests
English-language tests
Some courses, such as nursing, require applicants to demonstrate English language proficiency. Successfully completing an English-language test is one way of demonstrating such proficiency. English-language tests include IELTS (Academic) , TOEFL, Pearson Test of English (Academic) and the Occupational English Test (OET).
Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT)
The Special Tertiary Admissions Test is developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) to measure the aptitude of candidates wanting to undertake tertiary study. It is typically sat by those with no formal qualifications or whose qualifications are outdated.
The STAT has two formats: Multiple Choice and Written English.
For information about the STAT, including how to prepare and how to book, visit the STAT website.
Institutions consider STAT results for different lengths of time. If you have results from previous years, check with your chosen institution if they will be considered.
UMAT / UCAT
UCAT ANZ (University Clinical Aptitude Test for Australia and New Zealand) is a requirement for some courses. Sittings of the UCAT ANZ take place from July to August and bookings close in May.
Visit the UCAT website for more information (www.ucat.edu.au).
ISAT
ISAT (International Student Admissions Test) is administered by ACER (Australian Council for Educational Research). Currently, the only VTAC applicants required to sit ISAT are international students who are currently studying year 12 in Australia and applying for Type 3 places in Medicine/Surgery at Monash University.
Visit the ISAT website for more information (http://isat.acer.edu.au/).
VETASSESS
The VETASSESS Test is a requirement for applicants in some Nursing courses. Please check course entries in VTAC CourseSearch carefully to determine which courses require the VETASSESS (www.vetassess.com.au).
Casper
Casper is a non-cognitive online test designed to assess an applicant’s personal and professional attributes. Casper is a requirement of applying to many initial teaching education courses in Victoria. Courses that require applicants to sit Casper will list it under the selection requirements section within the course entry information.
Casper can only be sat once between 1 August and 31 July in any given year. Any results from tests sat prior to 1 August 2025 will not be considered in this application period.
You will need to sit the test by a certain date to be eligible for offers. Ensure you sit the Casper test at least six weeks prior to the offer round you wish to be considered for. You can search for dates by program and institution on the Acuity Insights website.
Regardless of which date you select, it is advisable that you register for the test at least two days beforehand.
Other admissions tests
Institutions may administer their own admissions tests. Details of any admissions test for courses must be published in the selection requirements in the course entry in CourseSearch.
Providing evidence for English-language and admissions tests
As part of your course application, you will be asked if you have sat the STAT in recent years and if so, when. You will also be asked if you have sat the UMAT or ISAT and if so, to provide your examination number. If you have sat an Englsh-language test, you can add details on this page too.
