Not every student starts the same way – and at Victoria University, you don't have to. As one of Australia's only dual-sector universities, VU offers both TAFE courses and uni degrees with seamless pathways between them, so you can start where suits you and build towards what you actually want.

VU is also the first uni in Australia to teach undergraduate courses using the award-winning VU Block Model®. Forget juggling four subjects at once: students focus on one subject at a time, in three-hour classes, three times a week. Smaller classes, more time with your teachers, and a way of learning designed to help you stay engaged and perform better.

With our strong focuses on real-world learning, industry partnerships and providing over 37,000 work placements to our students annually, VU prepares you for work from day one.

VU rankings & stats

  • #4 in Australia for graduate employer satisfaction (QILT Employer Satisfaction Survey, 2025)
  • #1 in Victoria for skills development and peer engagement (QILT Student Experience Survey, 2024)
  • #6 globally for sport science (ShanghaiRanking, 2025)
  • 37,000+ work placements each year
  • +52.5% increase in HD grades since Block Model roll-out (domestic HE units)
  • 310,000+ alumni worldwide

    Impactful courses & research
VU courses span from bachelor degrees and diplomas to TAFE certificates and microcredentials – all built around what industries need right now. VU is a global leader in health and sport research, with our sport science school ranked #6 in the world.

    Industry-embedded learning
With our 'flipped campus' model, at least one major industry partner is embedded on every VU campus – so you're studying alongside the organisations you want to work for. Our line-up includes major partners such as Western Bulldogs, Ambulance Victoria and Western Health, impactful collaborations with organisations such as Lifeline and Royal Flying Doctor Service – and even connections with elite global organisations like FIFA. And with our strong placement scheme, you'll be building real connections and experience from your first class.

    World-class campuses & facilities
We have six campuses across Melbourne, one each in Sydney and Brisbane, and 50,000+ students – including almost 14,000 onshore international students. We also have six international partner institutes across Malaysia, China, Vietnam and Sri Lanka, and our flagship VU India campus in Delhi NCR. With 41% of our Higher Education students the first in their family to attend university, VU is a global, diverse and deeply community-connected place to study.

Facilities include the $68m Institute for Health & Sport, simulation nursing labs, state-of-the-art trades facilities and the VU High Performance Centre at Whitten Oval. Specialist centres include our Cyber Security Training Centre, Sunshine Clinical School, a new research building at Footscray Hospital, and the Centre of Excellence in Paramedicine at Sunshine.

Admission criteria

Principles of selection

VU is committed to providing a transparent admissions process. Find out more about the university admission requirements for all applicants and our commitment to admissions transparency. Applicants must meet the minimum entry requirements to be eligible for admission to VU courses. Course-specific requirements can be found in both VU's course search and VTAC CourseSearch.

Applies to:

  • All Applicants

Applicants with recent secondary education

For most undergraduate courses, applicants need to satisfy the published prerequisites for the course. Some courses also require applicants to achieve a minimum ATAR in addition to satisfying all other course selection requirements. Applicants applying to an ATAR course with an ATAR below the minimum may still be selected if they qualify for subject/SEAS adjustments. The maximum adjustment an applicant can receive for a course is 20 adjustment points.

Meeting the minimum admission criteria does not guarantee entry into courses.

Applies to:

  • Applicants with recent secondary education

Applicants with vocational, education and training (VET) study

You must have satisfactorily completed an accredited award at Diploma level or above at an Australian Registered Training Organisation. Some VU courses may accept a completed Certificate IV. Check VU's course search or the VTAC CourseSearch for minimum requirements.

Meeting the minimum admission criteria does not guarantee entry into courses.

Applies to:

  • Applicants with VET study

Applicants with higher education study

For the majority of courses, applicants must have successfully completed or partially completed an Australian Higher Education award (or equivalent) or successfully completed a single unit of Higher Education studies. Some courses have higher requirements. Check VU's course search or the VTAC CourseSearch for minimum requirements.

Meeting the minimum admission criteria does not guarantee entry into courses. An equivalent ATAR must be satisfied and will be based on your past academic performance in Higher Education studies, VET studies, and in some instances your past Year 12 studies if still relevant.

Applies to:

  • Applicants with higher education study

Applicants with work or life experience

If you do not have any formal academic history, you may be considered on the basis of work or life experiences. Courses that will consider prior experience will include a request to provide this information. Applicants without relevant work or life experience will be assessed on their Year 12 results, and will be required to meet the prerequisites outlined under the recent secondary admission criteria and minimum ATAR (for courses that use the ATAR as part of selection).

Applies to:

  • Applicants with work and life experience

High Performance Sport Adjustment

For applicable courses, students who participate in high-level sport, performance, coaching or officiating can apply to receive a 5-point ATAR adjustment towards their Selection Rank. This counts towards the maximum 20 adjustment points allowed (including SEAS, subject bonuses and other schemes).

To apply, complete the Elite Sport and Performer Program application form and select 'Applying to study at VU' when prompted.

Please note: this adjustment does not apply to the Bachelor of Education (P–12) or Bachelor of Education (Primary).

Applies to:

  • All Applicants

Admission criteria

Victoria University’s approach to ATAR is flexible and student-focused. Access & equity through VTAC

Victoria University acknowledges that applicants come from a diverse range of backgrounds and life circumstances, including socio-economic, educational, cultural and linguistic, and that these factors affect an applicant's preparation for post-secondary study.Through lodging a Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) application, eligible applicants are provided with the opportunity to apply for additional consideration under one or more of the SEAS categories recognised by the University. In addition to completing a SEAS application, applicants must also complete and submit a VTAC course application, satisfy all requirements that are published in the relevant course entry and provide appropriate supporting documentation.

Additional information

English language proficiency

Victoria University sets minimum English language proficiency standards to ensure that all students can fully participate in their chosen studies and have a reasonable chance of success. For selection into a University course, all applicants, whether domestic or international, must meet the minimum English language admission criteria for the relevant course. Some courses may have higher English language proficiency requirements.

Further information regarding the minimum requirements for all courses, including a list of courses with higher requirements, can be found here.

Domestic applicants with overseas qualifications

Applicants with overseas qualifications are required to meet equivalent levels of course admission criteria listed in the VTAC CourseSearch. Your qualification will need to be assessed for equivalency to an Australian degree. Find out more about country-specific minimum academic entry requirements for our courses.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

Our commitment to Protecting Country is embedded in our teaching, research and operations, guided by our First Nations Action Plan and Moondani Balluk Indigenous Academic Unit.

Moondani Balluk – meaning 'embrace people' in the Woiwurrung language of the Wurundjeri people – is a dedicated, culturally safe space for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at VU. They offer enrolment and academic support, financial services, and pastoral care to all enrolled students. Applicants who wish to have their status as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person taken into account should complete the relevant section of the VTAC Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS).

Part-time courses

Part-time study is available for most courses. Applicants are encouraged to check availability for the relevant course on the course page. Please note, part-time study does not necessarily mean that classes are available in the evening.

Enrolment

Offer, acceptance and enrolment

Successful applicants will receive an email (to the email address supplied in their VTAC Course Application) with offer information and details about when and how to enrol.

Fees and financial assistance

It's a good idea to understand how much your course may cost before you apply so that there are no surprises. Some courses may require specialist equipment and material costs and for Higher Education students, you will be required to pay an annual Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF). There is a range of fee assistance, referrals and advice available to help you manage your finances while studying.

Credit/Advanced standing or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

VU recognises the knowledge and experience you already have.

For Higher Education courses, you can apply for credit or advanced standing based on previous study – potentially reducing the time and cost of your degree.

For TAFE courses, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) allows your past study, work skills or life experience to count towards your qualification.

Deferment

Successful Higher Education applicants may apply to defer commencement of their studies prior to enrolment. Deferment may be granted for up to 12 months. Deferrals may not be permitted in all courses, are not granted automatically and will not be granted to allow the commencement of another tertiary course.

Pre-training review and Language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) assessment

Applicants who are successful in receiving a conditional offer to a Vocational Education Training (VET) course will be required to complete a pre-training review and a language, literacy and numeracy assessment (LLN) designed to assist VU staff to better understand your aspirations and abilities to ensure the selected training program is the most suitable to your individual goals and objectives.
