Admission criteria
Admission principles
La Trobe is committed to providing students with transparent information so you can make informed decisions about which course to study. The University:
1. admits applicants based on merit with the offer of a place contingent on applicants having a reasonable expectation of success in their chosen course,
2. maintains application processes and minimum entry requirements that:
- are transparent, equitable and clearly communicated to prospective applicants,
- include standards for minimum English language proficiency for all applicants as outlined in the English Language Entry Requirements Policy, and
- are appropriate to level of the course of study as outlined in the Australian Qualifications Framework,
3. encourages participation from persons who have experienced disadvantage and groups under-represented in higher education,
4. will give due consideration to an applicant’s prior study and experience and awards academic credit as appropriate,
5. is compliant with all relevant legislation.

Prerequisite studies
Applicants for admission to courses at La Trobe must meet the entry requirements prescribed by the University's Admissions Policy and Procedures, including course prerequisites. Applicants who apply on the basis of Australian Year 12 studies are required to meet the published Year 12 prerequisites. In many courses, provision is also made for those applying on the basis of other backgrounds to demonstrate through an alternate criteria that they have attained an equivalent level of knowledge.

Interviews and folios
For some courses, applicants may need to attend an interview and/or submit a folio. Applicants who are required to attend an interview will need to demonstrate a range of attributes, such as personal motivation, relevant experience or previous study, an understanding of the course and potential employment opportunities.For applicants required to submit a folio, their work should be original and representative of their abilities. It should also showcase their conceptual and technical skills.

Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT)
The STAT Multiple Choice is an aptitude test designed to assess a range of competencies considered important for success in tertiary study.
La Trobe will consider STAT Multiple Choice results from Recent Year 12 (2021 or 2022) and Non-Year 12 applicants when selecting many of its undergraduate courses.
The VTAC course entries contain specific details regarding whether the STAT will be considered.
Note: STAT Multiple Choice will not be considered from current (2023) Year 12 applicants.

Credit (Advanced Standing) for prior study
Credit for previous study (advanced standing) is the recognition of prior study or learning that can be credited towards a qualification, thereby reducing the number of subjects required to complete your course.
Different types of study are assessed for equivalency including credential studies and informal (non-credentialed) learning.
Credit towards a La Trobe University course is granted as follows:
- for a block component of a course (for example, a completed VET diploma may entitle the holder to exemption from the first year of a La Trobe three-year degree course)
- for specific La Trobe University subjects (if there is a direct correlation between the prior learning and the La Trobe subject) or unspecified subjects (if there is no direct correlation, unspecified credit may be granted towards elective requirements of a La Trobe course).
- for compulsory coursework subjects within a graduate research degree where a cognate subject has been completed in a previous degree or there is demonstrated sufficient and relevant research experience. Bridging courses and entry programs
La Trobe University offers courses and programs to help you meet tertiary entry requirements.
The online Tertiary Preparation Program (TPP) is designed for those seeking a pathway to university who may not have completed formal schooling. You will gain strong foundation skills that will allow you to learn and prepare for University, specifically an academic skill-set, study confidence, decision making skills, and a pathway to continuing education.
This is a non-award program, however you will receive an academic transcript. Successful completion of the program supports entry into select undergraduate courses at La Trobe University.
This program is 100% free and online.

Pathways from TAFE and other VET providers
At La Trobe, there’s more than one way into uni.
Start your studies at La Trobe College Australia or one of our TAFE and VET partner institutes to gain direct or guaranteed entry into your preferred Bachelor’s degree at La Trobe.
You could also be eligible for advanced standing (course credit) for any studies you’ve already completed towards your preferred course at La Trobe.

Aspire Early Entry Program
Our Aspire Early Entry Program rewards you with an early conditional offer into your chosen course at La Trobe.
We have multiple streams to choose from, so if you've given back to your community, achieved good results in Year 11 or taken extra university studies, you could get an early conditional offer into your dream course before you've finished your Year 12 exams - or even sooner.

Aspire Achieve Plus
Aspire Achieve Plus is an exciting opportunity for high-achieving secondary school students to complete two first-year La Trobe University subjects while completing their Year 12 studies and have these recognised as part of their VCE.
Completing both Aspire Achieve Plus subjects and satisfying any other course prerequisites and requirements puts you in a strong position for entry into a relevant La Trobe University course. You’ll also receive credits for the University subjects if you go on to study your degree at La Trobe University, as well as an early conditional offer that will be based on your performance in the subjects, or your ATAR, whichever is higher.
Aspire Achieve Plus is accredited by the Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority as part of VCE, and your grades will be considered for an ATAR increment.

Aspire Achieve
Your ATAR is one way to get into university – and to measure your achievement. But La Trobe’s research shows there are other ways to predict your success.
That’s why you can now study a single university subject online while you complete your Year 12 studies and use your mark (instead of an ATAR) to for selection into a range of courses.
With Aspire Advance, get a taste of university life and unlock an offer to an eligible degree based on your university marks and your complete VCE, IB or interstate Year 12 (scored or unscored). Depending on the subject you choose, you can also receive credit towards your future degree.
This program is 100% free and online.

La Trobe Priority Access Program
The Priority Access Program awards eligible current Year 12 students with selection rank adjustments for entry into our undergraduate courses.
Students may be awarded multiple adjustment factors under more than one category, with a maximum of 15 aggregate points.
Adjustment factors are automatically awarded when students list a La Trobe University course as one of their preferences. There's no need to apply separately for the program.

- regional school

Regional Benefits Program
La Trobe Regional Benefits Program empowers high achieving students from regional communities to live, study and thrive in regional Victoria.
If you come from a regional school and scored an ATAR of 80 or higher* and have satisfied all course requirements (including course prerequisites), you are guaranteed a place in your chosen course** from offerings at Bendigo, Albury-Wodonga, Mildura or Shepparton.
Your guaranteed place will also include the benefits of the program and a may include a scholarship.
In addition, you’ll have access to opportunities and a supportive network to help you explore your passion. The Regional Benefits Program will set you up for success and help you make the most of your university experience.
* An ATAR of 85 is required to access the Regional Benefits program for the Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours) and Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours).
**Some courses have limited places; offers for the Regional Benefits Program in those instances are guaranteed for December and January round offers only.

La Trobe Elite Athlete Program
La Trobe University is committed to providing support to elite athletes who strive for success in both their academic and sporting pursuits.
Current year 12 students who can demonstrate that their sporting commitments have impacted their studies may be eligible to have a five (5) aggregate point adjustment factor applied. This adjustment is only applied to domestic undergraduate applicants who also satisfy the published course selection requirements.
If the student accepts a spot at La Trobe University, they may then be eligible for the Elite Athlete Program (LEAP). LEAP is designed to give students the tools they need to achieve balance across their active and academic lives.

La Trobe College Australia Diploma Pathway
La Trobe College Australia is the preferred pathway provider of La Trobe University. Based on the Melbourne campus located in Bundoora, La Trobe College Australia offers Diploma courses which pathway to Bachelor degrees at La Trobe University.
Diploma programs consist of units that are similar to those offered in the first year of a degree at La Trobe University. Students who progress from a Diploma to a Bachelor degree will receive some credit.
Choose from study areas including; health sciences, bioscience, engineering, media and communication, business, information technology and psychology.
A wide range of academic and welfare support services are available to students, including student learning support, peer assistance and counselling.
Class sizes are small, and we provide a nurturing and supportive environment for our students.
We are based on campus so you get that university experience from day one and have access to many university facilities whilst they undertake a pathway program.

Aspire Prepare
Suitable for Year 11 and/or 12 students, including ungraded VCE, HSC, IB and VCE Vocational Major students.
You will study three or six micro-subjects in Year 11 and/or 12, and La Trobe uses your average mark in Aspire Prepare to assess your application for a future La Trobe course. If you also receive an ATAR, we’ll look at that and your average Aspire Prepare mark and use whichever result is higher to assess your application.
Completing the program in Year 11 takes the pressure off those studying scored Year 12 programs, because you may already have a future course at La Trobe lined up via a conditional offer. Complete in Year 12 and you will receive a conditional offer before exams even begin.

Special Entry categories provide mechanisms to encourage the participation from persons who have experienced disadvantage and groups under-represented in higher education.

Health placements
La Trobe University offers health and professional placement opportunities for students with a mandatory placement component in their course, with local and international industry partners.
Students undertake clinical or professional education in the form of placements, fieldwork and other clinical and professional experience. These placements give you the opportunity to integrate theory with practice, further develop your skills through supportive professional environments and gain essential working knowledge of current industry practice.
Course Transfer
Currently enrolled La Trobe coursework students wishing to transfer to a course of study in another School or discipline within the University must, for most courses, apply using the University's online application, rather than through VTAC.
Application deadlines for course transfers may vary between Schools and entry to some courses is not available through this Course Transfer process.
Work Integrated Learning and Placements
Work Integrated Learning (WIL) subjects offer students a variety of placement opportunities both in industry or clinical settings as well as on campus in the form of industry projects. Some courses include core WIL subjects which must be completed in order to be eligible for graduation, and we also offer a range of elective WIL subjects, both cross-discipline and subject-specific.
WIL subjects generally involve an application process as admittance often requires Subject Coordinator approval.

Our staff are here to assist you with advice on application process, course options, scholarships, our Indigenous student services, and any further queries regarding studying at La Trobe.
La Trobe has five campuses across Victoria, with Indigenous support staff at each location to provide assistance to prospective and enrolled Indigenous Australians.
Our Indigenous Student Services Centres provide a wide range of support, which includes academic advice, free tuition, mentoring, referral services, and cultural and social events.
Our Melbourne, Bendigo, Mildura and Albury-Wodonga campuses each have a dedicated culturally safe Indigenous student learning hub. Each is fully equipped with student computers, photocopying facilities, research library and kitchenette all available for student use.

Enrolment
Acceptance of offer and enrolment
Successful applicants will receive an email that will contain important information about enrolling at the University. This will be sent to the email address provided at application.
To accept your offer, you need to activate your account online and enrol in subjects.
Note: Some courses have limited places, so to secure your place you must enrol in at least one subject (equal to 15 credit points) by the lapse date stated in your offer letter. Your offer will lapse if acceptance and enrolment in a subject (minimum 15 credit points) is not completed by your lapse date.
Costs and fees
University costs include subject fees or what you need to pay towards the overall cost of your course, a compulsory Student Services and Amenities fees, money for textbooks and equipment, and living expenses.
The Government subsidises the cost of many undergraduate places for Australian students, known as Commonwealth Supported Places.
As well as your tuition fees, you will pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) which covers all non-academic service costs at the university.
If you are eligible and have provided all required information, including a verified Unique Student Identifier (USI), Tax File Number and all other relevant documents before your first subject census date, you may also be able to defer your contribution through a HELP loan program.

Deferment
Successful applicants may apply to defer commencement of their studies for up to one year in many, but not all, of our courses.Applicants intending to defer should note that the University continually reviews its courses. If deferral is approved, the course deferred from may be revised, discontinued or cease to be accredited during the deferment period. Where this occurs, the University will attempt to offer an alternative study option in an equivalent or near equivalent course to the student.
