The Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT), developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), assesses the aptitude of candidates seeking to undertake tertiary studies. The test is available in two formats: Multiple Choice and Written English.

STAT is typically taken by individuals without formal qualifications or those with outdated qualifications. To confirm whether you need to sit the STAT, please review the institution publications as VTAC does not determine if it is required for entry.

For details on the STAT, including preparation and booking information, visit the STAT website.

Institutions vary in how long they consider STAT results. If you have results from previous years, check the Institutions that use STAT page to ensure your results will be accepted.

Certain courses require applicants to demonstrate English language proficiency to be considered for an offer. One way to meet this requirement is by successfully completing an English language test.

To check the specific English proficiency requirements for your course, visit the institution's website or contact them directly.

Accepted English Language Tests:

  • IELTS (Academic)
  • TOEFL
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic)
  • Occupational English Test (OET)

Important Note on Nursing and Midwifery courses: Nursing and Midwifery courses require you to complete an English Language Proficiency Declaration Form through your VTAC account. This is not the same as an English Language Test, though a test may be required depending on your response to the form. For more details, please read the “How do I provide my Nursing & midwifery English language proficiency declaration?” article.

Eligible Qualifications for Electronic Matching

VTAC can electronically match certain secondary and post-secondary study results. Applicants will be informed during the claim process whether an electronic match will be attempted or if supporting documentation is required.   The types of studies and qualifications VTAC can electronically match are listed below:

Secondary qualifications:
  • Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and other Victorian senior secondary results (e.g., VCE VM)
  • Australian interstate Year 12 results
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) results
  • New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) results
  • New Zealand Cambridge International Education (CIE) results

Note on international studies (IB, NCEA, and NZ CIE):
Some results require students to authorise their release to VTAC. Applicants should check that they have provided the correct permissions for VTAC to access these results.

Post-secondary qualifications: VTAC can electronically verify post-secondary results from most major Australian Universities. If an institution is not eligible for electronic matching, or if the matching process fails, VTAC will notify the applicant that supporting documentation is required.

Assessment of Overseas Qualifications for VTAC Applications

If you have studied overseas and are applying for courses through VTAC, your qualifications will be assessed to determine their comparability to Australian qualifications. This assessment is included in your application fee.

How VTAC Assesses Overseas Qualifications

VTAC uses approved assessment tools to evaluate your qualifications, primarily:

  • The Department of Education’s Country Education Profiles
  • UK ENIC (formerly UK NARIC)

This process determines whether your qualification is comparable with Australian qualifications.

How Institutions Use the Assessment

  • The results of VTAC’s assessment are only shared with the institutions on your course preference list.
  • Each institution makes independent selection decisions based on a competitive process.
  • They will evaluate your level of achievement against selection criteria and compare it with other applicants.

Important Notes

  • VTAC does not issue official assessment statements for qualifications.
  • VTAC’s assessment is solely for the purpose of course applications through VTAC.

Providing Your Education History in Your VTAC Application

Before submitting your course application, you must enter your complete education history in your VTAC account.

What to Include in Your Education History

You must list all current and previous studies, including:

    • VCE, interstate Australian Year 12, or international qualifications completed in secondary school.

Important Notes

  • You must declare all secondary and post-secondary studies, even if they are not relevant to the courses you are applying for.
