Day in the life of a first year uni student

Not sure what to expect when you start uni? Don’t worry! We’ve asked some recent graduates on their experience so far at university.
The jump from high school to tertiary study can be quite daunting and unknown. Going from a clear daily structure with classes, teachers and homework - university comes with a big dose of independence and solo learning.
What does an average day at uni look like?
“For me, it takes two hours to get to university, so I need to be super organised to get to class on time. I like to get in early and spend time in the library or study space to prepare before my tutorial. Given my long commute time, I like to spend at much time at university as possible, studying after class before heading home to eat and sleep.” - Ariel
“I can’t study anywhere but at home, so I follow my class schedule very closely. Most of my days are spent studying in the morning and then heading to the train station early to get into the city. I could skip my lectures however, I know that I won’t go back and watch them online, so I like to get there early to prepare. I often have two-to-three-hour blocks of classes of lectures and then take a break in between before heading to my next class. Once done, I head home to relax and switch off.” - Victoria
What surprised you most about university?
“It is so flexible! After starting university, it takes some time to see if your course or subjects are the right fit. A lot of friends have changed subjects, majors, courses and universities, all in the first year. University allows you to be more flexible in life, studying on campus or online and opening doors to internships with different organisations.” - Ariel
“University is a lot more self-driven compared to high school. You will need to keep on top of your coursework and assignments to make sure you don’t fall behind. If you have any questions about coursework you will need to talk to your professors in your own time as you can’t assume they will clarify. There is a lot more freedom in how you want to study and it’s important to make the right fit for you.” - Victoria
How do you juggle work, university and social life?
“University is my main focus at the moment, so I try not let work or social life get in the way. If I know I have university on certain days or times, I make sure I don’t schedule other commitments. When I do have free time outside of my studies, I like to catch up with friends.” - Victoria
“I have learnt that sometimes you have to make sacrifices in certain areas of life, as you can’t always juggle everything at one. I focus on my goals to know where to put my energy but always make sure I factor time for my hobbies. I find being social is the best way to take a break before getting back into study.” - Ariel
