What is change of preference?

Whether you're still choosing between a particular area of study or institution, or maybe you've just received your results and performed better than you expected. Change of preference is there for you to go into your account and update your course preferences as you see fit.

During specified periods you will be able to add, remove or reorder your course preferences in your course application. This is called change of preference. There are many reasons why you might want to change your preferences from:

  • Changing your mind about what courses you want to study
  • If a new course becomes available
  • You want to replace a cancelled course
  • You have received your results and want to add or remove courses

You can change your preferences before or after key dates like:

  • Before and after ATAR results are released
  • After the first offer round is completed
  • After each offer round in January

Tip for changing your course preferences

You can change your preferences in your VTAC account by logging in and opening up your course preference list. We always recommend listing your courses in order of preference – no matter what! Otherwise, you may miss out on receiving an offer from the course you most want.

Make sure you’ve reviewed the criteria carefully and you meet any and all requirements. Even if you get your first preference, you can still change your preferences. If you are interested in a course lower on your preference list, simply move it above the course you received an offer for, to be considered.

Attend change of preference events

Many tertiary institutions host a variety of seminars, workshops, events and activities to assist applicants with changing their preferences. You can find the full list of activities on our change of preference page or you can visit each Institution site.

These activities are a great way to ask any last minute burning questions you have of the institution and also allows you to talk to staff, students and attend a campus tour to ensure you’re making the right choice.

Change of preference is there to support you in your journey to tertiary education and make sure you have the best chance to study your dream course.
